MEP | Mechanical Electrical Plumbing

Definition MEP
MEP stands for "Mechanical Electrical Plumbing", which is also known as building services technology, facility services, or building technology in general. This encompasses all technical measures responsible for the technical supply of buildings (structures).

Building services technology generally includes all building technical trades, including energy technical systems (such as electrical systems, gas and water systems, or heat generation systems), systems for material disposal (such as wastewater systems, etc.) or telecommunications systems (such as data networks, security technology, fire detection technology, etc.).

The classical sub-areas
A concrete subdivision of the individual MEP trades takes place both in DIN 276 (regarding cost groups for building and civil engineering) as well as in the HOAI (Fee Schedule for Architects and Engineers). The trades are thus divided into:

– Sewage, water and gas systems
– Heat supply systems
– HVAC systems
– Electrical systems
– Communication, security and information technology systems
– Conveying systems
– Usage-specific and process engineering systems
– Building and system automation
– Other measures for technical systems

Furthermore, building services systems also exist in the cost groups of civil engineering measures or external facilities, which have not been considered here.

Share of MEP in today's construction projects
In the context of technical development and ever-increasing complexity of technical systems in residential and commercial buildings or special structures, MEP trades have gained more and more importance over the last decades.
Today, depending on the building type, we speak of a share of building services technology of 25 – 60% in building construction.

Furthermore, within the framework of the economic goals of the federal government and the generally higher awareness of the population for environmental protection, renewable energy generation systems are becoming increasingly important, which are exclusively assigned to MEP. This includes not only photovoltaic ground-mounted systems or so-called solar parks, but also wind power plants, combined heat and power plants or electric charging infrastructure systems for electromobility.

Typical specialized companies
Typical specialized craft companies for building services technology include:

– Electrical installation companies
– Heating and plumbing companies
– HVAC construction companies
– Telecommunications specialist companies
– Fire detection technology specialist companies
– Specialist companies for grounding and lightning protection systems
– Specialist companies for sprinkler systems
– Civil engineering companies for infrastructure systems
– and other specialist companies / construction enterprises

Our engineering office for MEP
As an engineering office in the field of building services technology, we are at your comprehensive disposal for planning, construction supervision/management, construction support and evaluation upon request. We develop efficient and realistic concepts and accompany construction projects until the final completion of the technical systems. Since we are not only pure building technicians but also building physicists, we naturally consider all necessary aspects of energy efficiency to offer future-oriented solutions.
